Chemistry

Grade: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra I and Biology with at least a “C-” or with Teacher Recommendation

Supplies Needed: A scientific calculator

A student who successfully completes Biology and Algebra in 9th grade can choose to take either Chemistry or Physics in 10th grade. Completion of Chemistry is required to take advanced Science courses at GHS including College Biology and College Chemistry. For that reason, current freshmen who plan to take these advanced courses are strongly encouraged to take Chemistry during their sophomore year.

Chemistry is an in-depth study of the matter that makes up our universe. Topics include scientific methods, compounds, elements, chemical reactions, gases, solution chemistry and acid base chemistry. Students will also study the process of chemistry through experimentation. This requires the ability to work cooperatively with others as well as independently. Strong math skills are required as completing calculations is a daily requirement of the course.

Having a strong foundation in chemistry is important in many career fields (Medical careers, Engineering, Environmental science, Veterinary medicine, Forensic science, etc.) Taking this course in high school will allow you to be more prepared for any future education you may pursue.

Current students enrolled in chemistry would like you to know:

I'm glad I took Chemistry because it was challenging but expanded my knowledge on elements and compounds with experiments.

I'm glad I took Chemistry because the things I learned in this class will contribute to my future career.

Before this summer I wanted to be a nurse so this class was one to take.

I'm glad I took Chemistry because it has challenged me but I was also able to get the hang of it.
