College Chemistry

College chemistry is an advanced study of chemistry for students who wish to take a second year of Chemistry in high school. The class offers an in-depth study of the topics in chemistry as well as the additional topics of kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium.

Prerequisites: Algebra 2 (or currently in Algebra 2) and earned at least a "C" in Biology and Chemistry.

This course is open to Juniors and Seniors who have met all of the prerequisites listed above.

This course is slated to be offered in 2018-19 and again in 2020-2021. This is important especially for 9th and 10th graders planning their schedules for the next two years. If you need to take this course to prepare for University admittance make sure to take the prerequisite courses prior to when this class is offered again.

This full year course is a weighted course (as are all College Science courses at Gwinn HS)

Taking two years of Chemistry in high school is strongly recommended for students planning to major in Engineering, forensic science, nursing, pharmacology, physician, veterinary science, dentistry etc.

Former Gwinn students who have attended some MI universities find that their first Chemistry course is the most challenging course they take for the entire year. By taking a second year of Chemistry before leaving high school, you will be well prepared for the first year in college, regardless of your specific major.

Several students already have plans to take College Chemistry in 2018-19. Here's what they have to say:

  • I plan on taking College Chemistry because I liked Chemistry this year and know I need College Chem for my career
  • I plan on taking College Chemistry because it's on the path for my career.
